Artist Statement

Ann-Denise Anderson

My work explores the space between memory, identity, and imagination through the language of collage and mixed media. Working with both analog and digital processes, I gather fragments from photographs, found imagery, hand-painted surfaces, textiles, paper, and printed materials, layering them into compositions that balance representation and abstraction.

At the heart of my practice is the belief that meaning is constructed through connection. Individual images may appear unrelated—a hand, a landscape, a city street, a botanical form, a piece of vintage ephemera—but when brought together they begin to create new narratives. Through juxtaposition, layering, and transformation, I investigate how personal experiences, memories, and visual culture intertwine to shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Much of my work features female imagery, particularly hands and gestures, as symbols of agency, creation, vulnerability, and connection. These elements often exist alongside landscapes, architectural forms, natural textures, and abstract passages, creating visual conversations between the internal and external worlds. I am interested in the tension between what is revealed and what remains hidden, allowing viewers space to form their own interpretations and emotional connections.

My creative process is one of accumulation and discovery. Layers are built, obscured, removed, and rebuilt as each piece evolves. This process mirrors the way memories are formed and reconstructed over time—fragmented, imperfect, and continually reshaped by experience. The resulting works invite contemplation and encourage viewers to look beyond the surface in search of deeper relationships and meaning.

As both an artist and educator, I am drawn to the transformative power of creativity. I view art as a means of inquiry, reflection, and connection—a way to explore complex ideas while remaining open to wonder and possibility. Through collage and mixed media, I seek to create visual spaces where fragments become whole, stories emerge from unexpected places, and imagination has room to flourish.

My ongoing body of work, Layers of Abstraction, reflects this exploration of transformation, narrative, and visual discovery. Each piece serves as both a record of process and an invitation for viewers to bring their own experiences, memories, and interpretations into the conversation.
